Many people still think that Medicare covers long-term care and/or overestimate its long-term care coverage. Medicare is acute care coverage; it does not cover custodial (long-term) care. The benefit of 100 days in a skilled nursing facility covers only skilled care. If you are on Medicare only, Medicare will cover the first 20 days at 100%, the next 21-100 days will cost the beneficiary $144.50/day. However, please be aware that if you plateau (i.e., you are no longer improving), you are no longer a skilled case and will not be covered by Medicare. If you wish to stay in the facility, you will be responsible for the full cost of your care unless you have and fulfill the requirements of a long-term care insurance policy.
