Yes, Medicare allows their beneficiaries to change from the coverage they had in another state/region to a plan offered in their new state/region. Since he has already relocated, the opportunity to select a new plan can occur in the month the beneficiary notified his current plan of the move and ends 2 months after notification of the move.
If he was on a Medicare supplement, he should call his carrier to see what change will occur in his premium. If he is on a stand-alone drug plan, he should call the carrier to ask if they have a plan in his new region. If he was on a Medicare Advantage plan, he should contact the carrier to see if they have a plan in his new region.
If he missed this election period, he will have to wait until Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7) to select what plan(s) he will want to be effective 1/1/2014.
