Yes, if your parents are dissatisfied with their benefits under the employer plan and they already have Medicare Part A and Part B in place they can go ahead with submitting a change as a special election anytime during the year to either a Medicare Supplement and stand-alone drug plan or a Medicare Advantage/HMO plan. They will need to submit with their insurance application(s) a notice from their current insurance plan that your parents’ coverage is being terminated and what that termination date is so that their new coverage with Medicare can be effective the 1st of the following month.
Your parents should be aware that we are about to enter Medicare’s Annual Enrollment period (Oct. 15 – 12/7). During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can select a change to be effective 1/1/2014 to either another stand-alone drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan. Make sure that you compare the plan benefits they are selecting for 2013 with that plan’s 2014 benefits before completing any enrollment paperwork.
