Medicare allows you a special election period to enroll onto a modernized Medicare Supplement/Medigap policy as well as a stand-alone drug plan. You will need to obtain from his retiree plan a letter indicating the termination date for your supplement and drug insurance with them; this letter will need to accompany your applications for new medical and drug coverage. If the insurance is terminating 4/30/14, your new coverage can start effective 5/1/14.
Please check with the retiree plan to (1) confirm that the drug benefit under the retiree plan is creditable drug coverage under Medicare and (2) obtain this confirmation in writing. Once you enroll onto a Medicare stand-alone drug plan, should Medicare question the drug coverage you’ve been on, they will ask your new prescription drug plan carrier to obtain verification from you that it was creditable coverage. Individuals who have not had creditable drug coverage since turning age 65 are eligible for a monthly penalty which they will carry in perpetuity.
