Medicare allows her a special election period to change her Medicare insurance coverage if she is moving from one county/region to another. Social Security (800-772-1213) – the administrative arm for Medicare – would need to be notified of the change of address for your mom. If Social Security is notified the month before the permanent move begins, then the special election period will end 2 months after the move. If Social Security is notified after the move, the special election period begins the month they are notified of the move or the month your mom was termed by her current plan due to residing outside of the service area and then ends 2 months after the notification of the move or after notification of the plan’s termination of her coverage.
If she is on a Medicare supplement/medigap policy, contact the carrier to see what her new premium will be and whether or not you should check out other carriers in your area for a lower cost premium. However, stand-alone drug plans and Medicare Advantage/HMO plans are all regionalized. If she is on either of the latter options, you will need to look into identifying another plan/carrier that will most effectively cover your mom’s specific needs.
