Yes, Medicare allows beneficiaries to change to a Special Needs Medicare Advantage/HMO plan (SNP) anytime during the calendar year. Please check with your physicians/medical group to see if they will take the SNP heart plan(s) available in your area. Before enrolling onto a SNP, review your drug costs and medical copays under the Plan.
If you decide you want to enroll onto the SNP plan, it will be effective the 1st of the month following your request. Please remember that your drug plan benefit on the new SNP plan will not restart for the year; it will pick up where your current plan leaves off.
SNP Medicare Advantage plans can change each year. Make sure to review the packet sent to you in September by the SNP you sign up for this year. In that packet they will outline their changes for the upcoming year. If you are happy with the changes, you don’t need to do anything during Annual Enrollment and your plan will be renewed for the upcoming year. If, however, your plan has significant changes or will not be available in the upcoming year, you will want to review your Medicare insurance plan options during Annual Enrollment (October 15 thru December 7).
