Medicare allows a special election period to change Medicare insurance coverage when people move from one county/region to another. Social Security (800-772-1213) – the administrative arm for Medicare – would need to be notified of the change of address. If Social Security is notified the month before the permanent move begins, then the special election period will end 2 months after the move. If Social Security is notified after the move, the special election period begins the month they are notified of the move or the month your parents terminated their current plan due to their move outside of the service area; it then ends 2 months after the notification of the move or after notification of the plan’s termination of her coverage.
Medicare Advantage/HMO plans are all regionalized. If your parents want to continue to be on an HMO, then you will want to select the medical group they will be aligned with and then find out, based on your parents medical and prescription drug needs, which of the medical group’s HMO plans will most effectively cover their needs.
